TODAY’S VERSE: PHILIPPIANS 4: 5-7

THEME: BE ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING

WORDS OF HOPE:
In life, there are possibilities that we are likely to face trials, persecutions, challenges, problems and humans as we are, the tendency is for us to worry about it. The Apostle Paul was in prison when he wrote to the church at Philippi, and in Philippians 4:6, “be anxious for nothing”, he was encouraging them to stand firm, remain unwavering in faith and in focus, while worrying about nothing even in times of need.
Their response to circumstances was to be prayer, supplications done while remaining thankful. What is the outcome of this approach? Verse 7 says in so doing, “the peace of God which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” against anxiety among others. Proverbs 13:12a says, “hope deferred makes the heart sick,” but opting for this approach of supplication with thanksgiving in one’s heart will bring unimaginable peace from the Lord and help guard against anxiety while waiting in expectancy for His response.
When he and Silas were imprisoned on his second missionary journey in Acts 16: 25ff, it was prayer and thanksgiving by singing hymns that brought them full deliverance and the salvation of the prison guard and his family. In fact, the Apostle Paul was indeed telling us that worrying is not a solution to any situation (Refer to Mathew 6:25 -27). Let me stress that Paul was not encouraging a careless and irresponsible attitude to problems.
The fact is that worrying about the situation will compound the situation. What are we to do? Bring your situation to God in prayer; “Oh Lord Jesus, I no longer want to be anxious about my marital problem, financial problem, and educational problem. I hand it over to you and humbly ask for a solution from you.”
God is Sovereign and Omnipotent, and Paul is saying to you in the words of his letter, “cast your burdens onto Jesus, and praise him while at it, knowing that he is already working it out for you, his way!”
Reflect on MHB 538: What a friend we have in Jesus.
