Passage: Luke 2:1-20
Service Type:

Introduction

Christmas is a season of Joy and Expectation. A season of Joy because the expected savior who is God has come into the world. It is a season in which we are reminded that the creator of the world became part of His own creation in order to redeem it and reconcile it to Himself. In John 1:14 we read, The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

At Christmas, we remember that we have been delivered from darkness into His marvelous light. It also marks the event through which God took the opportunity to make somebodies out of nobodies. Remember Mary and the Shepherds. On this special day we are reflecting on the theme, “Christ the savior is born” under the following;
-Christ was born at the appointed time
-The Angel’s message to the Shepherds
-The Shepherd’s response
-Our response to the Christmas message

CHRIST WAS BORN AT THE APPOINTED TIME
In Micah 5:2, we are told of the fact that Jesus will be given birth in Bethlehem of Judah. This was a prophecy given 700 years and over before the birth of the savior. However, when the time came for Jesus to be born, Mary and Joseph were living in Nazareth. Scholars Says that, Bethlehem is about 80 to 85 five miles from Nazareth. How are they going to get to Bethlehem then? Mary was heavily pregnant so how can she walk that distance? How can this prophecy be fulfilled then? But look at what happened in the reading, Verse 2 says, Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world
. This was the first census that took place. It was this census that took Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem to fulfill what the Prophet had said. I believe that this decree was given because the appointed time for the Savior to come to the world is due. Friends in the Lord, there is an appointed time for God to do something in your life so on this Christmas day, I came to give you the assurance that God has a plan for your life and His plans will unfold with time in the name of Jesus. Nothing can prevent the fulfilment of the plans of God concerning your life.

THE ANGEL’S MESSAGE TO THE SHEPHERDS
Shepherds are the lowly people in that society but God chose to reveal His salvation plan to them. The angel came with the following message;
-Do not be afraid: Remember the angel appears suddenly to the shepherds and that frightened them. There are so many things that come to frighten us so as to loose hope and faith in the Lord. It is my prayer that everything that frightens you terribly will give way this Christmas. On this special day, Christ the Savior who is born is admonishing you not to fear. Remember, He was born to take away our fears, and give us life that never ends
-I bring you good news: I believe that as humans, what we expect always is good news. It is this good news that I bring your way today. The good news that Christ was born for the salvation of all mankind. He is asking you to allow Him take charge of your life. Allow Him to dictate your path.
-This good news will bring great joy to all mankind: The good news is that a Saviour has been born who has the power and authority to deliver us from the power of darkness into His marvelous light. This is what they have expecting. May you joyful because a Saviour has come into your life to make you transformed.

THE SHEPHERD’S RESPONSE
The shepherds were directed by the angel to where the Saviour had been born. Know that in this crooked life, you need the Savior of the world to order your steps. The scripture says, the steps of the righteous are directed by God. It is only the Savior who knows the right way. You got to know him as your Savior so as to be directed by Him. You can never get lost if He is the one directing your life. For some of us, we have other things directing our lives and we are at the crossroads and are confused as to which way to go. May you accept this Savior who knows the way and may He direct your life in the name of Jesus. The shepherds did the following;
-They made known what has been told them about the child. They were able to declare the message because they had an encounter with the angel. Friends in the Lord, if you have an encounter with the Lord, it will change the way you live and behave. If you have an encounter with the Lord you will not remain the same. On this special day, may you have an encounter with the Lord in the name of Jesus. Song. He touched me… Something happened and now I know he touched me ……..Their message brought amazement and wonder to all those who heard it
-They returned praising God because the Savior had been born. Do you also recognize that the Savior has been born?

RESPONSE TO THE CHRISTMAS MESSAGE
Paul tells us how we are to respond to the Christmas message in Titus 2: 11-12 “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say ‘NO’ to ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled in this present age. We must respond in the following ways;
-Acknowledge that Jesus is the only Savior of the world. Acts 4:12
-We must learn to say worldly passions
-We must allow him to control every area of our lives
-We must live according to the standards of our Saviour
-We must turn away from the present age of materialism and sexual promiscuity
-We must fear the Lord
-Tell others about the Savior

Conclusion
The reason for this celebration is Christ. Throughout the celebration, don’t forget Christ the redeemer of our souls. As you enjoy your food and drinks this Christmas, never forget that the Savior expects you to live to glorify Him. AMEN
