Christian giving is the act of releasing something that belongs to you to a definite recipient as a response to the Word of God. The Word of God must be the only basis for our giving, and not any other reason.
We give because it is a command from God- Luke 6:38a. We also give because it attracts God's blessing- Acts 20:35b.
We must learn to give from our hearts, as indicated in Exodus 25: 1-2. We must also learn to give faithfully (Malachi 3:10). We must learn to give cheerfully (2 Corinthians 9:7) 2 Samuel 24:24 teaches us to give expensively.
Tithing, offering, voluntary thanks offering, harvest proceeds, ministerial support, seed sowing and first fruits are all platforms of giving in the Presbyterian Church. We must learn to take advantage of these opportunities for giving.
The monies we pay to the church are used to pay assessments, salaries and allowances, welfare and scholarships, evangelism, capital expenses, etc. Proverbs 11:24 shows that being stingy only makes us poorer and being generous makes us prosperous.
