Listening is a good thing. In our selected scripture for today, we read about three kinds of people.
1. Who are those invited?
2 What were they up to?
3. What were they told to do.
There were two groups of people that Jesus invited. The first group of people were those who were thirsty and could not pay for what they needed. So it is in our Christian life. There are so many of us who are experiencing some thirst in our hearts. Nothing seems to be working for us. Our hopes are fast fading. We feel so empty, unfulfilled, dissatisfied. The good Lord is telling us, we are the right candidate for him.
Come, our Lord listens. You just have to listen to him.
The second group of people are the Self Sufficient ones. Most Christians will say, yes I have everything but the Bible in Isaiah is advising that we should not spend money on what is not bread, and our labor on what does not satisfy. Rather, we should listen to God and eat what is good, and we will delight in Him.
We may have had all the resources of this world at our disposal but are spiritually bankrupt. The good lord is calling us to listen to him. In John 6:51, the Lord says: "I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eats of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."
In John 6:35, "Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst."
In listening to God, we are not to go alone but share the word of God with others. God is calling us because he is going to offer us not just water but also milk.
We need to grow in the nourishment of his word. God is not just inviting us for water but also milk in order to grow strong and stable in his word. Water corresponds with refreshment. God is inviting us to receive refreshment, restoration, revival and a new beginning.
Milk, on the other hand, corresponds to growth. We, therefore have to listen diligently. We live in a sinful world, a perishing world but there is a God who saves and He is calling us to come to him. We have to listen. He is ever ready to accept us and we have no excuse but to seek him and listen to him.
