Obedience means doing what one is told to do by somebody. Since God is the Creator and Lord of the universe, people should obey Him (Deut. 4: 35 - 40). To those who obey Him, He promises blessings; to those who disobey Him, curses (Deut. 11: 27 - 28).
From the Scriptures, obedience means to hear God's voice, to accept His authority and to do what He commands. Disobedience means to refuse to hear God's voice, to reject His authority and not to do what He commands (Jer. 7: 24). Adam's disobedience brought ruin to mankind, but Christ obedience brings salvation (Rom. 5: 19).
God commands all people everywhere to repent and believe the Gospel (Mk. 1: 15). Faith in Christ is obedience; unbelief is disobedience. Religious exercises are never a substitute for obedience to the commands of God (1 Sam. 15: 22).
The person who says he loves God but deliberately disobey God's Word is only deceiving himself/herself. Love for God leads to obedience, not disobedience. If a person develops the habit of obeying God, he or she will become a true servant of righteousness and a true servant of God.
By contrast, if a person develops the habit of obeying the sinful human nature, he/she will become a servant of sin and therefore useless to God.
The Word of God is the source of our strength and the source of our spiritual maturity. If you do not stay in the Word, the Word will not stay in you. The Word of God should not and is not a decorative appliance. The Word of God is the vehicle by which you and I get to know and become intimate with our Father who is in Heaven.
If you want to know who God is, it is revealed in His Word. If you want to know about God’s past relationship with man, it is revealed in His Word.
If you want to know about the future, you will find it in the Word of God. Anything you want to know about your journey here on earth, is revealed in the Word of God.
The Word of God tells you how to get along with your husband or wife. The Word of God tells you how to raise your children. What gives us spiritual power is the hearing and obedience of the Word of God. James in his letter says, we should not just be hearers of the Word, but we ought to be doers as well. If you obey the Word of God, it will change you.
It changed Peter from being a fisherman to a follower of Christ. It changed Matthew from a tax man to a Gospel writer. Paul had gone from a heartless killer to a holy life changer. And every time a man or woman comes into contact with the Word of God, there will definitely be a change in life. Bad places you used to go, you do not go there again. Wrong things you used to do, you no longer do them anymore.
Bad friends you used to hang out with, you do not hang out with anymore. I have discovered that people will never change just by joining the Church. People will never change just by joining a Group in the Congregation. People will change when there is an interaction with the Word of God.
You need the Word if you are going to be used by God.
You will have a better mission with the Word.
You will sing and worship better with the Word.
You will preach better with the Word.
You will love better with the Word.
You will live a better life with the Word.
For us to be obedient and fulfil the purpose God has for each of us and for this Church, we need to be willing to obey. Obedience will perfect our love and our unity. If we continue to move forward in obedience by strengthening the Church (Body of Christ), through love, unity and power, then God will bless His Church and use us to fulfill His vision in our lives.
The key to obeying God is knowing Christ. God is not a God of convenience, He is the God of Covenants.
HOW CAN WE OBEY GOD?
We obey God in our Heart - By loving God more than any other relationship, activity, achievement, or possession. We also do so in our Wills - The YPG has this to say, "To know His will and to do it." This means that, we need to commit ourselves completely to God. Another way we obey God is in Our Minds - By seeking to know God and His Word, so his principles and values from the foundation of all we think and do. Further, we obey God with Our Bodies - God created us in His own image. By recognising that our strengths, talents, and sexuality are given to us by God to be used according to His rules, not ours. We Obey God in Our Finances - Whatever we have, we hold them in trust for the Lord, we are just stewards for our Father. By deciding that all of the resources we have ultimately comes from God, and that we are to be managers of our finances and not owners. We obey with our future - By deciding to make service to God, the main purpose of our life's work.
God holds our future in His hands. Staying close to God will help you overcome your weakness in obeying Him. Obedience is a level to be reached by every child of God. We have to hence walk like He wants us to walk. We should begin to talk like He wants us to talk. We should be ready to do what He wants us to do. Obedience must be free and cheerful. Obedience must be devout and fervent, with great affections in the service of God. Obedience must be sincere, we must aim at the glory of God in it. Obedience must be extensive, and it must reach to all God’s commands. True obedience runs through all duties in religion, as the blood through all the veins. Obedience must be in and through Christ. Obedience must be constant throughout. Obedience makes us precious to God and through that, we shall be His favourite children. Be obedient to the commands of God all your life.
