THEME: THE ESSENCE OF KNOWING
WORDS OF HOPE:
Remember, John’s purpose in writing this letter is: that you may know that you have eternal life (1 John 5:13). And eternal life is more than just living forever. It involves an intimate relationship with the Triune God. In verse 3, John speaks of coming to “know” Jesus Christ who is God. Now the type of knowledge that John is speaking of is not an abstract intellectual knowledge. This would have been the sort of thing that these false teachers would have boasted in. Knowledge of God is much more intimate than knowing about God or even knowing all of the answers to a theological quiz. Knowing God is an intimate fellowship. It is personal and practical. It is a covenant relationship very much like marriage. To say that one knows God is to say that one is in an intimate covenant relationship with God. This is the kind of knowledge that John speaks of, it is a commitment to love and obey God. When we love and obey Him, we truly know Him because we know what pleases Him and we know Him not only intellectually but experientially. And John is supremely highlighting Jesus Christ in our passage. We know God by experiencing Him in Jesus Christ. The First Evidence of Knowing God is to Obey Jesus’ Commands. John’s point is this: how can we claim to know Jesus if we don’t even do what pleases him? John is telling us that you can’t separate knowledge from love and you can’t separate love from action. Later in 1 John 5:3, John says, “this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments.” In the same way John is telling us here that we know and love God in Christ by keeping Christ’s commandments.
PRAYER POINTS:
• Pray for grace to obey the Lord at all times.
• Pray for grace to be committed to the things of God.
• Pray that you will demonstrate experiential knowledge of the Lord.
PRAYER:
Lord, grant me the grace to obey you no matter the difficulty. Amen 🙏🏽
