TODAY’S VERSE:
Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions. Mark 10:21-22
THEME: ONE THING THOU LACKEST
WORDS OF HOPE:
Today’s text captures the ultimate response Jesus gave to a young rich man who wanted to know what to do to inherit eternal life and the young man’s reaction to Jesus’ response. This young man had earlier admitted that although he had been diligently following the Law of Moses since childhood, he was not saved. It is possible that he felt far from God. However, when Jesus gave him the opportunity to be saved, to come follow Him, to be close to Him, to enter into friendship with the Son of God himself, he could not take it. Why? ‘For he had great possessions.’ Is that to say that having great possessions is wrong? Certainly not! So, what was the problem? The first thing Jesus told him in today’s text gives us a clue…the man lacked something. What he lacked, we are not told in black and white, however, from the context we may surmise that he must have lacked the ability to let go of his possessions in order to follow God. His possessions meant so much to him that he could not just let go of them.
God may not be calling all of us to literally sell everything we have as a precondition to following Him. However, we may never have the opportunity to follow and know the Lord like we should if we let anything stand in the way. Do not let anything deprive you from following and knowing the Lord; it is not worth it!
PRAYER POINTS:
• Pray that God will enable you to cherish the opportunity He has given you to know Him more than any other thing.
• Pray that you will not lack the ability to give up anything to know God.
PRAYER:
O Lord God Almighty may we cherish the opportunity you have given us to love You, follow You and know personally that we will allow nothing to stand between us and You. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen 🙏🏽
