WORDS OF HOPE:
An incredible story is told about Horatio Spafford (1828 – 1888). He was a devout Christian and Presbyterian church elder, a prominent lawyer, an entrepreneur blessed with a thriving real estate business, and as such owned of several properties. He and his wife, Anna, were blessed at the time with four daughters and were known supporters of the ministry of evangelist D.L Moody. Indeed, all seemed well with him.
In 1871 the great Chicago fire broke out and devastated the entire city, destroying most of Horatio’s properties. Two years after this devastation, the family decided to go on a vacation to Europe. At the last moment Horatio was held back by business demands, and Anna and the girls went on ahead, sailing on the ocean liner S.S. Ville de Havre. On
November 21, 1873, the liner was rammed by a British vessel and sank within minutes. Anna was picked up unconscious on a floating pole, but the four children had drowned. Upon arriving in England, she sent a telegram to Spafford that read “Saved alone.” As Spafford sailed to England to join his wife, he penned the words of this moving hymn;
“It Is Well with My Soul”
When peace like a river, attended my way;
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
It is well; it is well, with my soul.
No matter how sorrowful life has become, learn to say it is well with your soul and encourage others that it is well with them for our God shall never leave us nor forsake us to be destroyed.
